High-Power Microwave Technologies

High-Voltage Marx Generators
for military, civilian and dual use applications: electronic warfare, counter-IEDs, etc.

Purpose

  • Source for microwave tubes: Vircator, MILO, etc.
  • Primary source for ultra-wideband systems
  • Source for flash X-ray photography.

Single Marx stage with sector-of-cylinder
high-energy ceramic capacitors for optimal
fill-in

Skills

  • Large know-how of development and assembly for 40 years
  • Optimizing modular stacked structures for specific applications
  • Inductive (or resistive) charging for
    repetitive operation
  • Design of self-contained generators,
battery supplied and remote optical triggering, high safety level
  • High-accuracy metrology, custom-tailored self-made field probes
  • High-voltage measurement capacity:
    up to 1 MV
  • Numerical modeling and simulations (PSpice)

Repetitive Marx: 1 MV, 20 stages @ 50 kV

Results

  • Peak voltage: 100 kV – 1 MV
  • Output energy: up to 250 J
  • Rise time: < 20 ns, with pulse forming:
    < 300 ps
  • Hardened to withstand difficult
operating conditions (moisture, temperature, vibrations, etc.)

Model – experiment comparison. Vout of 10 stages
on a 50 Ω charge

Facilities

  • HV capacitor chargers up to 100 kV
  • Resistive divider up to 1.7 GHz
  • Anechoic chamber, Faraday cages, GTEM cell
  • Electrical and mechanical CAD suites
  • Labs and assembly shop.
