High-Power Microwave Metrology

Purpose

Narrowband tubes (relativistic and
non-relativistic), wideband and
ultra-wideband system characterization
  • HPM generator/source diagnostics:
    measurement of current, voltage, local
    electric or magnetic field, etc.
  • Free-field measurements
    (electric and magnetic fields).

HPM source diagnostics (Vircator driven
by a Marx generator): measurement of
several electrical parameters

Skills

Probes and divider design, production and calibration at ISL
  • Passive probes (high sensitivity and dynamics)
    • H-field, E-field and current time derivative response: B-dot,
      D-dot & I-dot probes
    • direct time response: special current probe inside a
groove (up to 750 MHz) and TEM antenna (0.2 GHz–3 GHz)
  • High-voltage carbon resistive divider with large bandwidth.

Coaxial calibration cell

Facilities

  • Calibration coaxial cell
    • 170 mm diameter, cutoff frequency above 6 GHz
  • CALMOPLA: 2 m x 2 m2 ground plane for sensor calibration
    • good accuracy up to 6 GHz
  • Electronic devices (fast oscilloscopes,
    network analyzer, etc.)
  • Anechoic chamber: 12.5 m x 5.5 m x 3 m
    • absorption >27 dB [0.3–10 GHz]
    • transmission <-90 dB [0.1–10 GHz].

CALMOPLA: calibration with monopole on
the ground plane

B-dot calibration with CALMOPLA

Results

  • Output characterization of fast high-power generator with 50 W carbon divider
(DC -1.7 GHz, up to 500 kV)
  • Electron beam / plasma current measurement (several tens of kA)
  • Free-field measurement beyond 100 kV/m from 100 MHz to 6 GHz.
