Protection of Military Personnel against Noise and Blast Waves

Purpose

The main objectives of these
studies are:

  • To protect and reduce injuries due to
    loud noises and blast waves
  • To improve the operational efficiency
    by providing ergonomic and efficient
    protective equipments.

Results

Protection against noise and communication:

  • Development of innovative protectors
(passive or active) against continuous and weapon noise
  • Improvement of audio communication
in noisy environments by using specific transducers and adapted signal processing techniques
  • Improvement of the soldier’s “natural” capabilities for acoustic information
    processing.

Skills and Facilities

Testing capabilities and specific
metrology:

  • Tests in a reverberant laboratory with
pink noise levels up to 125 dB
  • Tests with an impulse noise up to 195 dB
(peak) carried out on our test range
  • Measurement of the impulse noise from
    guns, mortars, etc.

Effects of blast waves:

  • Expertise in the evaluation of human vulnerability
  • Testing of personal protective equipment
    by using instrumented surrogates
(artificial head, manikins, etc.) exposed to weapon noise or shock created by explosive charges.
