Test facilities in Terminal Ballistics

 Powder guns
For terminal ballistic experiments there are several powder-guns with different calibres at ISL.

Gun cal. 25 mm
is used for the acceleration of all kinds of projectiles, especially for long rod projectiles.

 Air-pressure guns

are used for impact tests at low hit-velocities.

Air-pressure gun cal. 25 mm
for the examination of the dynamic behaviour of materials by firing cylinders against a rigid wall.

 Light-gas gun

There is a two stage light-gas gun cal. 30 mm at ISL for achieving extreme high velocities. In the first stage, a piston is accelerated by a propellant to compress hydrogen in a pump tube. In the second stage the expanding hydrogen drives the projectile travelling down the launch tube. Thus projectile-masses between 50 g and 100 g can be accelerated to velocities between 2500 m/s and 4500 m/s.
