ISL : Research for Security and Defence

The French-German Research Institute is a bi-national institution established by the Federal Republic of Germany and the French Republic on the basis of a treaty signed in 1958 (see). The original mission of the ISL was: "Research, scientific studies and basic predevelopment in the armament domain".

The classical working areas of ISL include: laser-matter interaction, laser development, detonics, perforation, protection, ballistics, the environment and protection of the soldier, acoustics, power electronics, high power microwaves, aerodynamics and flight mechanics, optronics, sensors.

Recently the ISL has reinforced its activities on problems of civil security and counter-measures against terrorism encountered both at home and during overseas military operations.

The institute is situated in Southern Alsacia near the German and Swiss border (see)

MOTAR Meeting 29 and 30 march 2010 at ISL (11/03/2010)
DLR-ONERA-ISL experts discuss about metrology and observation technics in aerospace applications Saint-Louis 29 and 30 March 2010: On the joint invitation of the German Center for aerospace studies (DLR) and the corresponding French Center ONERA, the regular expert meeting MOTAR will take place for the first time at the French-German Research Institute (ISL). MOTAR stands for „Measurement and Observation Techniques for Aerospace Research“ and is considered to be a successfull cooperation modell organised since 1994 between France and Germany.

Workshop Battlefield Acoustics (10/03/2010)
The following topics are of major interest for this workshop: · Acoustic environment on the battlefield: vehicles, helicopters, … and weapons noises (characteristics, metrology, …) · Acoustic sensors for counter-sniping, for ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) applications, for acoustic locators, and for sensor networks Performance of acoustic systems for detection and localization including the influence of the environmental conditions (acoustic propagation) · Noise control and audio communication (Talk Through devices, Active Noise Reduction, …) New technologies: advanced techniques in signal processing, 3D Audio Display … National or international actions in these fields (DGA, BWB, EDA, …)

EPPL – (European Pulsed Power Laboratories) An european initiative - 12 march 2010 (05/03/2010)
EPPL ( European Pulsed Power Laboratories) bundles the interests and expertise of Europe's prinicpal pulsed power laboratories based in six European countries. (Germany, France, Italy, Lithuania, Belgium and in a second step Sweden have decided to join their efforts and to create a joint laboraty in the domain of pulsed power technologie.
