ISL is offering a PhD Position
Doctoral student / PhD candidate (w/m/d) in the field of effects of high-energy laser radiation on structure materials
Laser technology plays a key role in material processing. Due to the technological progresses, industry lasers are now also available in the range of 100 kW CW at around 1 µm wavelength. At those high powers, a variety of physical and chemical processes occur, which influence the energy coupling and tue subsequence material modifications. The primary objective of this doctoral project is to assess the consequence of this power upscaling on laser weapon performances. As part of a first step, numerical modelization / simulations have to be realized by extending existing models, which describe the effect of high-energy laser radiation on solids and ideally allows scaling of the models developed for lower power classes into this power range. In addition, experimental campaigns carried out at both the EMI and ISL will allow to gather physical measurements, mainly temperature fields, for model validation.
This doctorate project is being carried out within the framework of a cooperation between the institutes Fraunhofer EMI (Germany) and the German-French research institute Saint-Louis (France) and the Helmut-Schmidt-University (Universität der Bundeswehr) in Hamburg (Germany). This not only combines three attractive locations, but also offers work in the German-French binational context.
